Submissions to a Pride Month event from Erotica Abyss

The goal: Six fics centering queer characters, only 1000 words each. There were six prompts provided, one for each color of the early six-color Pride flag. While the event allowed to double-dip on prompts, I wanted to write one fic per prompt, because it felt like an easy finish line to define.

I don’t think any of the fics I ended up submitting were my original ideas. When I only had 1000 words, I had to cut subplots, tighten dialogue, veer off course, abandon some drafts, and force the pacing to get faster and faster. It was a challenge! A common theme in my notes below are that I struggled with staying under 1000 words.

But here’s all six! Each one was its own little adventure to write, and I hope to read. They’re all pretty different from each other, spanning the Wild West, the Great Depression, modern day, to a space-faring future. Some are meet-cutes, some are about relationships that ended. Some are sexy and some are sweet. Enjoy!

Red: Life ❤️

I had a couple ideas for a theme on ‘life’. A locked boy feeling like he is starting a new kinky life. Two summer camp counselors running for their lives from a serial killer. But the one I chose came to me all of sudden one afternoon.

I’ve been playing around with an idea for a sub top. Someone who is used as a living dildo, essentially, but who isn’t allowed to cum. Just serve! So what about a sex party with a sub top tied up in the bedroom for all the guests to use as they pleased?

I purposefully never gave any character a ‘real’ name, just nicknames. In the case of the MC, I never gave him a name nor gave him dialogue. I wanted a sense of distance from these characters, as a way of empathizing with the subby, tied-up top in the bed: He never got to see anyone’s face, learn their names, speak up, or do anything but let other men fuck themselves on his cock. The party was very anonymous, spontaneous, and mysterious, so it seemed appropriate to write like that, too. This fic is one of my favorites in the set!

Orange: Healing 🧡

I’ll admit at the top that this was my least favorite fic of the set, because it still feels unfinished. The story went through a couple iterations before I finally settled on one idea and wrote it out. But I still feel like the story is a bit forced. Oh well, they can’t all be bangers.

I definitely wanted to include one fic with a character in a chastity cage. Upon reflection, it was probably this arbitrary requirement for myself that limited by creativity here. Again… oh, well.

At first Damian was going to be a new employee at some office, who was exploring chastity on his own after a bad break up last year, in an attempt to reclaim some of his sexuality. Then he was going to meet Zach in a food truck during a lunch break, they were going to hit it off, and Zach was going to slip Damian his phone number. But the chastity didn’t feel like a significant component of this story.

So I changed it so Zach and Damian both worked on a food truck and were already together. Damian was locked (Zach was his keyholder) as part of reclaiming his sexuality after ending a toxic relationship a couple years ago. I think I got this point across, but the story wasn’t… engaging enough for me.

But then I got other ideas and decided to move on.

(By the way, I really want someone to invent an “All Orange Food Truck,” with curries, pastas, carrot cake, orange juice, etc. You put tomatoes and cream together, or use citrus and orange, or carrots… I’ll give you so much of my money!)

Yellow: Sunlight 💛

This was my second fic written for the set, and I really wanted to do something different with ‘sunlight’ from my first fic (i.e. Green) with characters in the woods or something. So I brainstormed for a while and thought it would be interesting to have a character see sunlight for the first time. Were they in caves? Did they live on Venus (a la “All Summer in a Day”)? No, but I liked the space theme. Perhaps the fic takes place in the future, where humans live across multiple galaxies, and so there’s lots of stars they live near, not just our Sun.

Then, I thought: ‘Sunlight is so cheery and nice. Let’s make it sad instead.’

Originally, the main character was going to reflect on the death of his mother, who never got to see Earth’s sun, because she was poor and worked in a space gas station (or something) until her death, far from the sun. The MC was going to be joined by his boyfriend, and they would even have a smutty scene at the end? But that didn’t seem right with the tone.

So I changed it around. It’s still sad, but you’ll need to read the chapter to see! I really liked how it turned out.

Green: Nature 💚

This was the first fic I wrote for the set, and the original idea was to have two parallel stories of an uncle having a secret gay lover in the 1990s and then his nephew realizing he is gay, too, but in the 2010s. As I wrote the first of these two stories, however, I realized I couldn’t fit both in under 1,000 words. So I just kept the uncle story.

I also moved it to the 1930s because the Great Depression just gave me the right vibe for two friends finding comfort in each other during a time of struggle. (Also I just like writing historical fiction!) So I filled in the story with more details, looked up 1930s slang, created a more nuanced friendship and made them both competitive people, and tried to sprinkle in clues that they were crushing in each other.

Overall, a wholesome fic!

Blue: Serenity 💙

I don’t really read or write super fluffy fics, so I struggled a bit with the theme of serenity. Since we were allowed to interpret the themes very loosely, I was searching up synonyms for serenity and seeing if anything inspired me. I did get inspired, but at first only because I thought ‘What if Serenity is the name of a place?’ An immediate connection I made was with ‘Perfection, NV,’ the fictional site of the Tremors movies. That ol’ dusty aesthetic caught my imagination, and so I made ‘Serenity’ the name of a Wild West town (except I put it in Kansas, rather than Nevada).

My first idea was that Sid was going to be a male sex worker (in a fictional universe where that was normal and fine), who lures in a learned and stuffy bookkeeper on his way to California for work. The idea was that Sid was like a Greek mythological Siren, who lured men to their ruin. Sid was going to fuck the bookkeeper so good, he would give up his plans to stay with Sid in Kansas.

But the writing didn’t come forth. The idea was fun, but I couldn’t know how to fit so much into just 1000 words. I decided to do something different. What if–unlike the Greek myths–the sirens traveled around rather than stayed put? Thus came forth Gerry, a mysterious cowboy who shows up to Serenity and lures Sid (now a piano player who works at a brothel, but isn’t a sex worker himself) into his first queer sexual experience.

Purple: Spirit 💜

This was my very last fic in the set and the one I really couldn’t think of anything for. When I did think of an idea I really liked, I just kept writing and writing and blew way past by 1000 word limit. Since I didn’t want to pare it down, I made it its own fic! That’s currently in the works.

After what felt like punishing myself for having a good idea, I made myself just pick something so I could finish this set. Did ‘spirit’ mean ghost? A thing’s nature? A liquor? … I ended up choosing the last one.

I brainstormed what the story might be while I fell asleep one night, and somehow–through a stream of consciousness I cannot remember–I decided to split up this already short fic into smaller parts based around articles of clothing: Shoes, socks, hats, shirts, pants, underwear, etc.

When I found some free time the next day, I made a quick outline of what I wanted: the story of a grocery store worker flirting with a customer (striking up a conversation based on clothing) and eventually leads to a date. There, fic done! Set done!
